Family and Community Engagement: Back-to-School GRIT

During the back-to-school season, parents and guardians fill our school grounds alongside their students. The transition evokes a range of emotions from all involved. As adults, we strive to support students’ success and foster a secure environment that minimizes anxiety and stress. It is important to recognize that, in most cases, school provides a safe setting where students can develop resilience through facing manageable challenges.

If a student is nervous about making new friends, or anxious about their new teacher, or arrives with lunch but forgets their drink, or brings supplies but leaves a notebook at home, such moments offer valuable learning experiences. These instances encourage responsibility and the development of grit and problem-solving skills.

It is fantastic to support our students through advocacy, including Individualized Education Programs (IEP) and 504 plans, participating in the PTA, and being visible in the school community. However, it is not necessary to shield them from every difficulty. Allowing students to face minor setbacks helps prepare them for more significant challenges as they mature, particularly during transitions to middle and high school.

If your student struggles with anxiety, consider creating a plan together with what you and they can do if they begin experiencing those big feelings. They will be able to keep those coping techniques with them once you’ve dropped them off.

By remaining engaged and supportive, we empower students to build confidence and flexibility. They are capable, and with ongoing encouragement, they will continue to succeed.

You’ve got this! They’ve got this!
